You know the moments I'm talking about - the ones where your infant child looks you in the eye and the two of you communicate by eye contact in a way only mom and child can. I had one of the moments on Friday... sorta.
Gabe is generally a good breastfeeder and latches on well. He also has an incredibly strong sucking reflex. But occasionally he gets a little lazy with his latch, causing me to either a.) yelp in pain, b.) peel myself off the ceiling or c.) both. He was particularly hungry at his lunchtime feeding and as a result was snorting and rooting like a piglet (incredibly cute) and not paying attention and latched on poorly (not cute). Like I usually do, I took him off my poor abused nipple and waited a second for him to open his mouth the way he should and try again.
He sat there stunned for a moment, staring at my breast, like he was trying to process the fact that I had dared to take his boob away. He then proceeded to roll his eyes up to meet mine. The communication between the two of us was clear: "Mom, I KNOW you didn't just pull that boobie out of my mouth!" His lower lip then began to stick out and quiver and he burst into melodramatic tears.
I couldn't help it. I laughed.
It may not be the Hallmark moment that every mom dreams of, but it was a shared moment I don't ever want to forget.
